That's not to say that Alan has retired from television though! Alan's latest project is a back-to-basics BBC2 series entitled "How To Be A Gardener". New series commenced - 6th February 2003. Alan is such a relaxed and informative presenter. How to be a Gardener is a series that's definitely worth watching! --------------------------------- An earlier Daily Mail article about Alan's departure from Ground Force is reproduced below:- When interviewed by the Daily Mail and asked if he thought his departure would be the end of Ground Force Alan said 'I have no idea. I shall smile sweetly and say ta-ra and that will be it.' When asked if he would consider changing his mind and staying on Alan replied No, I&'ve not had any thoughts like that. Ill be happy to go. Reasons for leaving include the fact that it had become boring performing the same kind of two day garden makeover on the same kind of narrow, long suburban garden time and again. 'The repetition element is tough and you find yourself doing yet another garden with decking and a water feature and a bit of gravel. It has been getting much harder for us. The viewers like to have gardens which are like their own, which is long and thin. It has been a challenge, but I would rather stop doing it now before I run out of ideas. Theres a limit to what you can do over two days for £2,000. I sometimes think that Id like to do brickwork in lovely intricate patterns, but there isnt the time. Id love to work in shiny stainless steel, but there isnt the money.
